Wing Chun & The Real World of Violence
Why does Wing Chun have "emergency techniques?" Why do we talk about straight hitting and simplicity all the time and then also practice things like Gaun Sao and Kwan Sao, which obviously aren't as simple and direct as an eye-jab? Well, because fighting in the real world, unlike in the school or ring, can be full of surprises. To think that we're always going to know when the fight starts, and where the attack will happen, is the stuff of insanity. That's the Achilles heel of most modern training. It presumes too much.
In today's video, Sifu Jason explains how and why Wing Chun is both simple AND comprehensive. It's not either/or. We need both the basics and emergency measures in order to...

JKD: Have No Way As Way
Просмотров 77419 часов назад
What does it mean to truly have no way as way? This is a question that absolutely needs to be answered in JKD. The half-digested, half-thought slogans we have in life, especially this one, cause tons of trouble in our application and training. Why? Because all practice is the practice of a theory or philosophy. This means that we're doing - practicing - what we believe to be true. To life "half...
Best Knife Technique for Self-defense
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.21 день назад
Simplicity rules! Especially in self-defense when seconds count and there’s tons of pressure. Most people overlook the knife as a good self-defense tool because they get confused by all the fancy techniques they see demonstrated. Well, the truth is that if it’s flashy, it’s trashy; throw it out. All you need is the versatility of the Snap-Cut. When used with and supported by good footwork, the ...
Three Things We Must Do for JKD to Survive
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.Месяц назад
Is JKD dying? Will it still be taught and practiced in the future, or is it going to fade away as Bruce Lee's career recedes further and further into the past? Well, that just might happen if JKD teachers and students don't focus on three essentials that we detail in this video. No profession can survive hacks and amateurs at the helm, so Sifu Jason talks about three foundational things all of ...

All out fighting isn't a sport, of course. But how do we bridge the gap between the two? How do we make sure that we're ready for reality? In today's video, Sifu Aaron takes you through the seemingly contradictory worlds of sport fighting (on the ground) and the realities of survival. Yes, you must have enough skill and experience to know how NOT to get choked out, or to get your arm broken. Bu...
Wing Chun Ground Defense

Lots of us in Wing Chun say things like, “in real fights we don’t wanna go to the ground.” Or, “in the street with multiple opponents and concrete, we wanna stay on our feet.” Well, that’s all true. Absolutely. But what happens if we get taken down? Denial is never a good plan in life. Especially in self-defense. For that reason we must train ALL RANGES of combat. Yes, even on the ground. And t...
Infighting Genius: Chi-Sao Class Footage

Real infighting is nasty business. All targets are on the table and you have virtually no space...so, therefore, not much (if any) time to react. Chi-Sao gives us the only scientific means of practicing and developing skill at this most dangerous range. Wing Chun or Boxing? Both!
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.2 месяца назад
There's an irrational assumption that boxing and Wing Chun are antithetical and that you can't do both. The problem with this is that without safe sparring there's no way to develop timing and accuracy. Moreover, there's no better way than boxing to get a chance to see punches coming at you. That's a critical skill! But what about infighting? What about life-or-death type struggles where anythi...
Biu Jee Applications Part 1

At last, a video you've guys have been asking about for a long time. Biu Jee is Wing Chun's enigmatic third and final empty hand form. It's enveloped in a great amount of confusion. Another interpretation is that Biu...

A sudden, violent encounter is no place for complexity. This was Bruce Lee's whole point. Simple, direct and effective is what you need in a violent clash and that's what JKD is supposed to deliver. This is most evident with JKD's leading straight punch....

Have no way as way is the same concept as "be water." It doesn't make do whatever you want. It means the world, the need will dictate what you become -- that you will accept what the world requires you to be, rather than trying to force your will. The way you train to find that flexibility is the difference between the original and concepts sides.

Having no way as way refers to an advanced level of JKD... It really means freedom... That would be the ideal.. This in no way means you're not doing anything...it doesn't mean you are not using some mechanic or some tactic... anyone who thinks that simply doesn't get it... No way as way runs all through JKD; the water example: Water uses no way (shape) as way but it is obviously still water... we train a thing, we learn the thing and then we forget the thing... Bruce also said something like that, "At first a punch was just a punch; then when I studied a punch was no longer just a punch; then after I studied a punch was just a punch again...." It is returning to the beginning -- natural unnaturalness...the original JKD ranking showed this: the highest level was the same as the beginner level... Remember? Likewise you start doing this style or that style but in the end you're just doing you... Free your mind, be shapeless like water... Be true to who you are my friends.... :)

I think it means what it says. That is to say a system or style does not exist. Naturally , any fighting must as a necessity be mobile and evasive. To an extent, how we respond will be predicated on what our opponents does. I do agree that there has to be certain principles in place. I personally believe that his expression of the art was always changing and adapting. Just a thought.

I think this might be the way some people have interpreted "have no way as way" or "have no limitation as limitation": that for example if the opponent is a grappling-based martial artist, that you should fight the same way he fights. Or if it's a taekowndo guy, you should fight the same way he fights, etc

@@dagaffer2269 while I have serious philosophical disagreements with Mr. Inosanto and his followers, some of which I’ve articulated on this channel, I try and refrain from any and all ad hominem attacks. I don’t know for certain Mr. Inosanto’s motives but take at face value that his relativism has led him to teach as he does. I truly appreciate your watching the channel and taking the time to comment. I truly do. But I also hope that all of us work hard to keep our pursuit of the truth disciplined and respectful. I will add, of course, that in my other video wherein I explain why he’s wrong about JKD Concepts, his followers exposed themselves as astonishingly irrational and even hateful. All of their replies were either illogical ad hominem or fallacious appeals to authority. As always, watch out for the self-proclaimed beacons of tolerance and open-mindedness, because they prove to be neither when you disagree with them. To that end, I like to think we’re different over here. Anyway, thanks again for watching.

I believe you should spend some time with forms first then slowly bring the training/drills. We started learning simple drills half way through the first form. That will keep you from learning bad habits. We would discuss in class of how we were able to use wing Chun in our personal lives. Wing Chun should be apart of your everyday experience, to make the system come more natural to you.

It's funny how despite all my experience in martial arts ( Okinawan Goju Ryu karate, MMA) people still think I am an idiot when I say no matter what art (s) you have studied and what level you are at it is physically impossible to beat multiple attackers in a real situation.

Is that Bruce Lee’s fighting method? If so I had them in the smaller paper back form from the 90s when I was a kid in middle school… I think some of it needs to be updated for today with grappling and MMA techniques being known by even high school kids that watch Saturday night UFC fights and know how to do even sloppy rear naked chokes and guillotines, which are even more dangerous when applied by untrained people. And BJJ being more popular than ever. That being said, it still has some good stuff in there. It just needs some updates that reflect today. In to be fair the books I believe Bruce did them sometime in the 1960s..

It sounds to me like you want to commercialise JKD and turn it into MMA. JKD isn’t for everyone. Bruce didn’t want it commercialised because it’s not like other martial arts. There’s already no quality control for the art as it is. There is next to nobody who has ever been as efficient at it as Bruce because nobody trains like Bruce. And if you follow Bruce’s training and methods people are quick to say “you’re just copying Bruce” well, nobody follows Bruce’s training methodology or the principles as it is and what do you get? Awful representations of JKD that look more like mma. There is only one person who’s even similar to Bruce and that’s because he follows Bruce’s methods which quite frankly if more people did, JKD would be in a much better state of affairs.

I like your fight science, less so your economics. A national budget is not the same as a household budget. Spending can lead to more wealth generation and initiate a virtuous circle, while austerity can do the opposite. Also, where a state has a sovereign currency the state can actually create more money, which can fuel inflation if done recklessly, but not if done sensibly when there is spare productive capacity in the economy waiting to be mobilized, or the extra money is used to generate more productive capacity.
